     A web site banner is an advertisement in the form of image and text. Though you will see banner ads placed in a variety of different areas, they are commonly used at the top of a webpage. This technique maybe considered a holdover from when internet banner advertising was in its glory days but it really serves a more practical purpose. The top of the page is where you are most likely to attract the attention of your visitors.

     So why the rush to place banner advertising alongside the fossil remains of the tyrannosaurus at your local museum? Online Advertising Over The Years

     Users are no longer naive or gullible to be sucked into a vortex of pretty images, short ads and banners because they are more likely to click away than to click on the ads. A major example of a new idea would be The Million Dollar Homepage. I’ve got to hand it over to this guy. Build ONE PAGE, optimize it, sell it for a one-time fee and he’s earned himself a handsome amount of money – enough to put a guy through medical school, I’m assuming.

     Anyway, it was a refreshing idea pushed through by desperation, if nothing else, and it was something the creator thought wasn’t going to work.

     Online advertising has become so diverse these days that there are more interactive options open to advertisers now. Some of them are incredibly useful while others were vain attempts. One of the better ones is the floating advertisement idea. As annoying as it is, it still works better than the conventional type of online advertising. You know how you’d try to avoid an advertisement on a web page by scrolling away? Well, with a floating advertisement, no matter where you scroll the page to, the advertisement remains…. well, for lack of a better word, in your face! The only way to get rid of it is to find that tiny little ‘x’ or ‘close’ somewhere. Either way, the ‘x’ would be so small that site visitors might accidentally click through to the advertisement because they missed the target or they spent some time looking for the ‘x’ that they ‘noticed’ something worth clicking on in the advertisement.

     The most annoying kind of online advertising today isn’t the floating advertisements, however. I find the expanding advertisements cripplingly annoying. Why? Because the moment you put your mouse over it, the ad expands, sometimes filling up the whole screen! So, you’d have to be very careful where you place the ads. But the good news is that when you pull your mouse away, the advertisement minimizes itself again. The reason why I hate it is because I have to be extra careful where I put my mouse cursor. Branding Company Benefits

     Business large and small should consider hiring a professional branding company. A branding company brings a lot to the table. First and foremost they bring a third party objective point of view that a business is unable to obtain. The old saying holds true, you can’t see the forest through the trees. But how do you choose the right branding company? Ask yourself these questions.

     How do they promote themselves? Are they calling themselves an advertising agency that also does branding? If so, they are not a true branding agency. An advertising agency has a hidden agenda, to sell advertising. A branding company does not favor one tactic over another so they should not and would not promote advertising unless it is the right direction to go in. Be careful of these ad agencies that say they do branding. It is much easier to use a buzz word like branding then to actual know how to brand properly.

     Are they a web design company that says they do branding? These are the absolute worst offenders of not being a branding company. Ask them simple branding questions like what is positioning or explain the difference between brand identity and brand image. Most will not even know the answer. Then you can ask them a trick question like define brand equity (currently there is no definitive answer). Web design companies are well, web designers. They are not strategic branding experts by any stretch of the imagination.

     Are they a marketing company that says the do branding? Be very careful of marketing companies as they are the sneakiest offenders of all. They will talk strategy and integration but they know little about internal branding.
